(SHEFFIELD) Jimmie Ruth Burton Parris, 95, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2020.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church of Tuscumbia. The service will follow at 1 p.m. Dr. Rudy Guess and the Rev. Mark Parris will officiate. The graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at Midway United Methodist Church Cemetery, Wedowee. The Rev. Mark Parris and the Rev. Alan Barrett will officiate. Visitation will follow.
She was born Nov. 29, 1924, in the Denver community of Tallapoosa County, the youngest of 15 children. She graduated from Chambers County High School in 1942 and from Berea College in Berea, Ky., in 1946. She and Alton were married on the Southern Union College campus in Wadley on March 27, 1948. She was employed in social work up until the birth of their first child. She was supportive of her husband's ministry in Methodist churches, including the Roanoke district.
She is survived by her husband of 71+ years, William Alton Parris of Sheffield; children, Joel B. Parris (Joan) and Rev. Mark D. Parris (Julianne), both of Tuscumbia, and Elizabeth "Beth" Parris Barrett (Alan) of Pine Mountain, Ga.; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; nephews, nieces and cousins. Jimmie was preceded in death by her parents, James Monroe and Susan Elizabeth McEachern Burton; and 14 siblings.
