The Roanoke City Council passed an amended budget in a called meeting last Thursday in an effort to get the budget completed prior to the Oct. 1 deadline. The called meeting to pass an amended budget was necessary after a figuring error was discovered in the original budget that passed at the scheduled council meeting on Sept. 20.

The specifics of the changes are not clear, however, as the city did not provide a copy of the amended budget to the Leader prior to our Tuesday print deadline.

Rushton sworn in

Tommy Rushton was sworn into his seat on the council at Monday's scheduled meeting. Rushton takes over for former council member Bronwyn Bishop, who resigned last month after moving out of her district.

Outdoor alcohol license approved

The council approved a special event retail alcohol license for the Chuckwagon restaurant at the corner of North Main Street and Highway 22. The restaurant has added an outdoor amphitheater, and owner Jeff Fetner needed the special permit to serve alcohol at events that take place at that venue since it is situated outside the premises of the restaurant.

The license was approved by a 3-1-1 vote with Mike Parmer voting no and Kesa Johnston abstaining.
