High cotton

Addison, Ansley and Carter Payne show off the county's first crop of cotton in 2019

MOUNT PLEASANT - It's been a cotton pickin' long time, more than a generation, since the fields of Randolph County have held a crop of cotton. But this year Eric and Alison Payne of the Mount Pleasant community have planted cotton.

If you are a fan of "Backward Glances" on the Opinion Page, you might have noticed in the old Randolph Leaders, it was a big deal for a farmer to have the first bloom, the first boll and the first bale, and he would take his bloom or boll to the newspaper office for proof. He would get his name in the newspaper and his plant would be placed in the office window.

In 2019, the proof came to us electronically, but the accolades are the same for the Payne family, displaying the first bolls of their crop, a sign of a fluffy fall harvest coming to the fields of Randolph County once again.
