A Newell man said he was beaten and robbed in a Roanoke pasture by men wanting to steal his income tax refund.
According to the report from Roanoke Police Department, on May 2, the victim asked Tirell Lamar Hughley, 25, of Government Street, Roanoke, to drive him to World Finance to get his income tax refund check and then to Walmart to cash the check. The victim then asked Hughley to drive him back to the Budget Inn.
Instead the suspect took Waldrep and his female friend to a pasture off Gilham Road. There they met two other men in a charcoal gray Charger. They asked Waldrep and his friend to step out of the vehicle and asked him where the money was. One of the men beat him across the side, top and back of his head with the butt of a pistol. Then they took his wallet. The female friend ran away leaving her belongings in the suspect's car.
Hughley was arrested on June 10 and charged with robbery, but the two black males in the Charger have not been identified and remain at large.
