A Roanoke woman died Saturday night and a Selma man is charged with her murder following a wreck on U.S. 431 South in Roanoke.
A celebration of life for Sonya Lynn Hyatt, 43, of Roanoke was held at Happy Trails Restaurant on Tuesday night, following her visitation at Quattlebaum Funeral Home.
Jackie Lamont Hunter, 31, of Selma is charged with murder, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and DUI.
According to the report from Roanoke Police, at approximately 11 p.m., Hyatt was traveling southbound on U.S. 431 in her 2013 Chevrolet Malibu in front of the Budget Inn. Hunter was traveling north in his 2011 Chrysler 200LX.
As Hunter approached the Budget Inn, he crossed over the center line while in the curve. His vehicle continued off the left-hand side of the road and began to pull back into the road. When the vehicles met, Hunter's vehicle hit Hyatt's vehicle head on in the southbound lane.
James Michael Kirby, 59, of Five Points was behind Hyatt in his 2007 Chevrolet Silverado. His truck struck Hyatt's car from behind, left the road and came to rest at the far edge of the parking lot of Budget Inn. Kirby was unhurt.
Hyatt's and Hunter's vehicles came to rest facing north. Hyatt was pronounced dead at the scene. Hunter fled the scene on foot. People who stopped to assist provided a description of him, and officers were able to capture him.
