WEDOWEE - Over the last few months, there has been a lot of construction and remodeling going on in the Town of Wedowee.
First State Bank, currently located on South Main Street, will move to a brand new location and will hopefully open in the spring or early summer. The current bank ran out of room, and the new location at the corner of North Main Street and Woodland Avenue East will give plenty of space for offices and customers.
Remodeling is taking place at the old Harry's Service Station building on the corner on North Main Street and First Avenue Northwest, across from Wedowee Town Hall. The building was purchased by Crystal Walker of Hunter Bend Realty. When completed, the building will house Lake Wedowee Winery and will have an apartment on the second floor and an entertainment and meeting area on the third floor.
Just around the corner on West Broad Street at the former location of Bill's Dollar Store, remodeling is now complete and will offer several office suites. Already planned are a glass company, a beauty shop and a bakery/sweet shop.
South of Wedowee adjacent to Tanner Medical Center property is the new location for Cleburne Pharmacy, currently located in Wedowee Village Shopping Center. The new location will be much larger and will offer a large amount of over-the-counter medications, gift items and a friendly staff to fill your prescriptions. Plans are to open in the next couple of weeks, as soon as all inspections are completed.
If you are a fan of ice cream and barbecue, watch for the spring opening of Boondocks BBQ & Creamery on Highway 431 North, just south of Lakeside.
There are more changes coming in the next few months, including the construction of a new town hall and police department and additional work to be done on Main Street by the state highway department. Additional details will be published in The Leader when they become available.
