Joe Steverson Thompson

(BOWDON, Ga.) Joe Steverson Thompson, 82, of Bowdon, Ga., passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2023.

He was born on Jan. 19, 1941. He was the son of Shellie and Verna Thompson. He served in the Vietnam War from 1966-1968. He was employed by Lamar Manufacturing, James Watson Ford Dealership as a mechanic, and later retired from Trintex in Bowdon as a machinist.

He was a member of Providence Baptist Church in Woodland, where he served as a Deacon for over 30 years. He enjoyed playing his guitar, sitting on the porch, watching Alabama football and the Atlanta Braves.

Survivors include his loving wife of almost 60 years, Barbara Saxon Thompson; son, Scott Thompson; daughter Staci (Richard) Gillespie; granddaughters, Haley and Hannah Thompson, Katelyn and Abbie Gillespie; brothers, Maxie Thompson and Sammy Thompson; and sisters Jean Haynes, Shirley McManus and Carol Gilreath.

Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Loyce Thompson and sisters, Betty Jameson and Grace Stone.

Funeral services were at Providence Baptist Church in Woodland on Friday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. The Rev. Terry Eason and the Rev. Tony Morris officiated.

Serving as pallbearers were Brandon Teate, Daryl Thompson, Randy Green, Mark McManus, Johnny Harper and Jack Shelton.
