County man awakens to smell of smoke, saves house from potential fire

Reports are for period ending September 11.

Tin Shop and Woodland volunteer fire departments responded to a house fire at 2:20 a.m. on County Road 59 in the Rocky Branch area. Joe Louis Trammell told responders he was asleep on the couch when he awoke to the smell of smoke. Trammell ran through the house looking for the source of the smoke and found it on the front porch. He used a fire extinguisher to put it out, but then called 911 so firefighters could be sure it was completely out.

D&S Marine on Highway 48, west of Wedowee, reported the theft of cash from the office.

A resident of County Road 35 near Broughton reported that a friend had taken his portable power supply box and pawned it.

DP Oil on U.S 431 near Foster’s Crossroads reported that they received a counterfeit $100 bill.

A resident of County Road 82 in Newell reported that they heard a boom around 2 a.m. and later discovered their mailbox was in pieces with mail strewn everywhere, some of it burned.

A resident of Highway 22 in Rock Mills reported that his mailbox and garbage can were destroyed.

A Roanoke man reported that he had a 2019 Can-Am Renegade posted for sale on Facebook Marketplace. A potential buyer contacted him, brought him a cashier’s check for $12,000 and took the ATV. At first the bank took the check; however, a few days later, the bank said the check was not good after all.

A wallet was reported stolen from a home on County Road 61 at Rock Stand.

A Newell man reported a case of identify theft on Sept. 8.

A woman reported that a man physically assaulted her and took her vehicle on Sept. 8 on Ernest Road in the Mt. Pleasant community.

A Dodge Caravan camper was reported stolen on Sept. 9 from near Foster’s Boat Ramp.

Damage to a school bus was reported on Sept. 9 on County Road 264 near Foster’s Crossroads.

A vacant home burned on Sept. 9 on County Road 429 in Graham. Newell and Morrison’s Crossroads volunteer fire departments responded. The property owner was William Stillwell.

A Kawasaki and Suzuki motorcycle were reported stolen on Sept. 10 from County Road 235, east of Wedowee.

A utility trailer was reported stolen from Jessica Drive, north of Wedowee.
