Criminal trial session to begin Sept. 5

Seven cases are listed on the docket for the start of next week’s criminal trial session at the courthouse in Wedowee. Circuit Judge Kevin Hall will preside over the hearings.

This session was originally designated for civil cases, but none were ready for trial, so the court pivoted to use the time to clear some of the criminal backlog.

According to Randolph County circuit clerk Chris May, the order in which the seven cases will be tried has not been set, and with each case in varying stages of the legal process, it is possible not all seven will end up going before a jury during this session.

The trial session will begin Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. with jury selection, after which the court will proceed with the docketed cases one at a time. Two weeks is the normal time period in which the court will hold trials, but this session will be one less day because it begins a day after public offices are closed for Labor Day. The upcoming session is set to end on September 15, but could conclude sooner if all of the cases on the docket are addressed or resolved before that date.

The next criminal trial session in Randolph County is scheduled for November 27-December 8.
