Wedowee town council member removed from office

At last week’s meeting of Wedowee Town Council, District 5 Council Member, Willie Maude Brown, was officially removed from her position on the council. Mayor Tim Coe said that according to state law, “any member who had not attended a meeting or participated in council activities in 90 days shall be removed from the council.”

Council member Jerry Huddleston made the motion with Pam Traylor Johnson seconding to vacate the district 5 seat and seek qualified candidates. The council had the option to reappoint Brown but did not. Mayor Coe stated the council could possibly have a replacement to vote on at the next meeting. The matter was on the last meeting agenda, but there was no quorum.

Merchants Association report

Council member Pam Traylor Johnson gave a report to the council from the Wedowee Merchants Association.

She said the association had set the following dates for special activities in the town.

  • Through August 28- Meals on the Median
  • October 26- Trunk or Treat downtown
  • December 2- Christmas Tree Lighting at the old hospital property.
  • December 7- Christmas Parade
  • December 31- a New Year’s Eve drop at First Bank. It has not been determined what will be dropped.

In other business, the council:

Approved to hire one additional employee for the street department.

Approved up to $2,800 for a grant match for improvements in the downtown area. This is in cooperation with the merchant’s association, Kiwanis Club and the town.
