Any resident of Roanoke knows you don’t have to drive far to find ongoing roadwork projects within the city limits. Multiple roads are in various stages of resurfacing and have been for several months. For Roanoke motorists, it may seem that the end of the repaving hassle is nowhere in sight.
But that is not the case.
After several projects sat untouched for weeks due to weather delays and some internal equipment issues at Gary Ingram Grading and Paving, work has resumed with in full force all over town.
Several roads were stripped of their previous surfaces and were left in that condition during the pause in the action, but now those stripped down roads are quickly becoming a thing of the past.
Airport Road already has its new surface, and Industrial Boulevard was closed Tuesday afternoon while it went through the same treatment.
Both roads went through full depth reclamation (FDR) in order to get below the deteriorated portions and to resurface from solid ground. According to Harmon Engineering, which is overseeing the paving projects on those roads and provided the Leader with a detailed report on the ongoing work, Airport Road is “substantially complete,” meaning cosmetic work such as striping is all that remains in order to close the project.
Industrial is expected to reach this same stage by the end of the week.
West Point Street
One of the largest, most involved projects has been the resurfacing of West Point Street and the construction of designated turn lanes and a median in front of the Roanoke Recreation Center and Senior Center.
“This area is excessively wide, with six intersecting drives at various angles, leading to issues with high vehicle speeds,” according to Tuesday’s report from Harmon Engineering. “To address this, speed bumps were initially added, but the area still experiences significant vehicle and pedestrian traffic, leading to unsafe conditions with random street crossings and the need to traverse 40 feet of two-way traffic.”
As an alternative to speed bumps, the engineers created another solution that took advantage of the space available on that stretch of road.
“A curb island with designated turn lanes will be installed in the wide portion of the street,” the Harmon report read. “Curb islands serve as effective ‘traffic calming’ devices, helping to slow down traffic without relying on speed bumps. The turn lanes will efficiently control turn movements, reducing conflict points and minimizing the risk of collisions.”
With the start of school and football season right around the corner, Harmon acknowledged the urgency of getting that portion of West Point Street complete.
“The paving phase is scheduled to be finished by the end of this week,” Harmon reported. “Given its proximity to the high school, completing West Point Street is of the utmost priority to ensure substantial completion before the school opening.”
The report also lists Bud Cummings Road, Peachtree Street and Franklin Road as having to undergo full depth reclamation as well. Paving on those roads will begin in earnest once the work on West Point, Industrial and Airport are complete.
