Man dead after being shot inside vehicle in Roanoke

A man was shot and killed inside a vehicle early Sunday morning in Roanoke, and as of Tuesday afternoon Roanoke Police had not made an arrest in the case.

The driver and gunshot victim was identified as Dwight Lamar Poole. Poole was pronounced dead at the scene by the Randolph County Coroner.

It’s the third suspected murder this year in Roanoke, after a January shooting left a Roanoke man dead and another shooting in April took the life of a Roanoke woman.

None of the incidents are believed to be related.

According to a Monday press release from the Roanoke Police Department, sometime around 2 a.m. Sunday, a Roanoke Police Department Officer heard shots being fired near the Corner One gas station at the corner of Highway 431 and Main Street.

Officers responded to the area and began searching the area but never received a call from a victim. Officers searched the area but were unable to pin point exactly where the shots were fired.

A short time later officers heard more gun shots coming from a different location. Roanoke Police Department received a call, reporting shots fired into a vehicle. A witness told Roanoke PD that someone had been shot inside a vehicle at the intersection of Knight Avenue and Commerce Street.

There were two passengers inside the car at the time of the shooting, according to Roanoke Police Chief Jonathan Caldwell, but they were unable to identify the suspect.

No other details were released.
