Hiram Joseph Powell
(WADLEY) A celebration of life service will be held for Mr. Hiram Joseph Powell, 83, Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023, at Wadley First Baptist Church. Visitation with the family begins at 11 a.m. with celebration of life service beginning at noon.
Mr. Powell passed away Tuesday, Jan. 10, at his home in Auburn.
He was a native of Clay County and a 1958 graduate of Bibb Graves High School. He later graduated from Jacksonville State University. Mr. Powell began his teaching career at Mellow Valley High School. Prior to his retirement he taught for many years at Southern Union State Community College in Wadley. He was affectionately known as “Coach Powell” to his students. He had many accomplishments in life to be proud of, but the ones he loved most called him Daddy and Papa.
Mr. Powell is survived by his daughter Shanda Adams (Tucker) of Pelham; and his grandchildren, Clay Cotney, Allison Cotney and Anna Cotney, Sydni Adams and Shelby Adams. Other survivors include Shanda’s sister, Selina Johnson (Barry); her children, Kyle Johnson (Alexis) and Kaci Barker (Ryan); as well as her grandchildren, Brayden Wells, Brynlee Johnson and Laney Barker; his sister, Nellie Ruth Powell; sister-in-law, Joyce Powell; special friends, Herschel Battle and Michelle Buchanan; and many special Powell and Smith cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Francis Glover Powell and Harriet Smith Powell; brothers, Hoyt Powell and Hollis Powell; and sister, Imogene Powell.
