Jimmie F. Gross

(WEDOWEE) Private services for Jimmie F. Gross were held at Rocky Branch Baptist Church on Dec. 10, 2022. He was the grandson of Solomon and Cora Chaffin Gross and of Joseph and Viola Wilson Parker; the son of C. Arlin and Minnie Parker Gross. He was preceded in death by his sister, Janie Gross Traylor, and his nephew, Guy Thomas Traylor II. He is survived by one sister, Wilma Gross Kelly and a niece Joy Kelley Bailey.

He earned a degree from Baylor (BA), Auburn (MA) and a PhD from the University of Georgia, where he was awarded a two-year fellowship from the Univ. System of Georgia. He retired from Armstrong State University, Savannah, Professor Emeritus. He was a member of Phi Alpha Theta and Phi Kappa Phi, academic societies, AAUP, and the Petrie and Samford Societies at Auburn Univ. as well as various academic and professional societies. He was the Rajiv Gandhi Visiting Professor at Andhra Univ. in India in 1994.

After retirement, he chaired the committee that named the auditorium at Randolph County High School in memory of George W. Yarbrough, Principal, wrote and established the Sesquicentennial History of Rocky Branch Baptist Church, and established an endowed scholarship in memory of his parents, Arlin and Minnie Parker Gross, in the College of Liberal Arts at Auburn Univ.

For the love, support, and friendship of his family, friends, and 1954 classmates of RCHS, he is truly appreciative. He is particularly indebted to Dr. Charles Wynes, his dissertation director at UGA and two colleagues at Armstrong, Dr. Ross Clark and Dr. Osmos Lanier: to them a special salute. Finally, a special thanks to Barbara and Lance Barron, executors.
