Wedowee council grants special status for expanding business

WEDOWEE – At last week’s meeting of Wedowee Town Council, the council approved a special incentive (a rebate program) for A & E Metal Roofing as the company plans for an expansion.

According to Mayor Tim Coe, the taxes will remain the same for the company, and the approval will not affect the general fund budget. The development will include a capital investment of $500,000 and will create five new jobs. Owners Carlton and Jason Amason opened the facility in Wedowee in 2003. They service areas in West Georgia and East Alabama and are a manufacturer and distributor of metal roofing panels and components. The Amasons have other locations in Kellyton and Smiths Station.

Coe said, “The council and I are happy for the Amasons. Their business has been here in Wedowee for almost 20 years, and we appreciate their commitment to the town and the investment to bring more jobs to the town.”

Randolph County Economic Development Authority director Bryant Whaley was in attendance at the council meeting and said, “This growth shows the resiliency of rural Alabama, and our county continues to grow.”

The Amasons said they appreciate the support from the town and the area. Construction will begin in just a few weeks.

911 fees

Mayor Tim Coe read a letter from Kelly Edwards, director of Randolph County E-911. The letter states that all municipalities with the exception of Roanoke, volunteer fire departments, ambulance services and wrecker services will be charged for dispatching starting Oct. 1. The charge for the Town of Wedowee will be $5,240 for dispatch, $5,094 for warrant/record maintenance and $324 for communication fees, a total of $10,658 per year with a 3 percent increase for three years. Coe said the amount seems high, but the town has to have it. “I just want everyone to pay their fair share,” said Coe.

In other business, the council:

  • Approved Danielle Sorrells as a signer for town accounts. She is currently the assistant town clerk.
  • Approved Dei’tra Roundtree as signer for the municipal court and correction fund accounts.
  • Commended Kelly Caldwell for her work on the recent scavenger hunt.
  • Approved repairs to the sidewalk on Highway 48 at the football practice field.
  • Approved trimming brush and trees from the Mill Street-Highway 48 intersection.
