Woman assaulted after kayaking on Tallapoosa
TALLAPOOSA, Ga. – On Monday, May 16, Haralson County, Ga., deputies responded to Higgins Hospital in reference to a sexual assault. Deputies were advised that a female was kayaking alone down the Tallapoosa River between Broad Street and Liner Road. When the female got to the sandbar area close to Liner Road, she was accosted by three men. The female was able to get away from her attackers but did sustain some injuries.
Although the attack did not last long, the victim was able to give some description of her main attacker and the two other males involved, all males are believed to be in their 30s.
The main attacker had long shaggy blonde hair with a full reddish blonde beard with tattoos on his arm. The second male had brown hair with a full brown beard and the third male was either bald or had very short brown hair and a trimmed beard. One of the attackers was wearing red short/swim trunks.
This sexual battery investigation is ongoing currently, and if anyone has any information, please contact investigator Brent Duggins at Haralson County Sheriff’s Office at 770-646-2011.
The victim and the sheriff’s office would like to make sure everyone knows about this incident, to be aware of the possible danger that can occur while being in this type of environment. Kayaking and floating the Tallapoosa River are popular and can be a wonderful, relaxing time for individuals, as well as, for small and large groups. Please be aware that not everyone is there for a positive reason.
Here are some tips to help keep you safe on the river:
- Don’t go solo! The larger the group, the larger the deterrent.
- Be aware of your surroundings and watch for anyone on the shoreline. You may not even realize someone is there and watching you.
- Make sure others outside your group know your float plans and route.
- Have a pre-determined action plan if trouble finds you.
