Knight, Kinsey named SU distinguished alumni

The Southern Union Foundation, which is responsible for the vast majority of scholarships awarded from the school, held its first Distinguished Alumni Banquet and Fundraiser last Thursday at Moore’s Mill Club in Auburn.

Two Randolph County natives were named as the initial distinguished alumni honorees at the event.

Long-time instructor and Wadley resident Dr. Carol Knight, and the late founder of Wes Kinsey received the inaugural awards from the foundation.

Both Knight and Kinsey were heralded for their efforts at preserving the autonomy of Southern Union in the face of a 2015 push to consolidate the school with several other Central Alabama community colleges.

Knight received raucous applause from the banquet attendees as she received her award. Kinsey passed away in the spring of 2018, but his wife Donna and his grown children Katrina Ballew and Caleb Kinsey were on hand to accept the award on his behalf.
