Martha Gladden Hill

(BIRMINGHAM) Martha Gladden Hill, 85, of Birmingham passed away Monday, Feb. 21, 2022, at her home.

The funeral and burial were Monday, Feb. 28, at noon at Jefferson Memorial Funeral Home and Gardens in Trussville.

Martha was born July 17, 1936, in Athens, Ala., to Roston Elmer Gladden and Reba Newby Gladden. She graduated from Hewitt-Trussville High School in 1954 and Samford University. On May 19, 1956, she married Lowell G. Hill of Wedowee at her home in Center Point. Martha was employed in accounting and human resources at Vulcan Materials Company for over 40 years. After retiring, she was a persuasive and successful fund-raiser for multiple charitable organizations, enjoyed special event planning, and was an award-winning public speaker. Martha was passionate about a cappella singing and a talented alto vocalist. She sang often with her three sons, and her love and talent for music is carried on by her children and grandchildren. Martha was an active member of Homewood Church of Christ.

She is survived by her husband; sister, Gale Gladden Melton (Martin); sister-in-law, Elois Caddell; three children, Lowell Keith Hill, John Kevin Hill and Douglas Bradford Hill (Elisabeth Rohlfs-Hill); and two grandchildren, Gareth Bradford Hill and Igrainne Paikea Hill. Martha was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, John Stanford Gladden and Bobby Glenn Gladden (Pat); and sister, Edwina “Winkie” Blake (Allen).
