Marjorie Ruth Herring Martin
Marjorie Ruth Herring Martin passed away Jan. 18, 2022, at Cahaba Ridge Assisted Living in Vestavia Hills.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. on Jan. 30, at First Presbyterian Church of Talladega with the Rev. LeeAnn Scarborough officiating. Her cremated remains will be buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Talladega.
Marjorie was born in Thomaston, Ga., in1928, a twin to sister Margaret Ann Herring Stewart. The family moved to Talladega in 1929 and lived in Bemiston. She graduated from Talladega High School in 1947. She attended nursing training at St. Vincent’s in Birmingham from 1947-1950 and received a registered nursing degree. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Talladega and the Lydia Sunday School class. She was given an honorary life membership in 1985. She served in the Presbyterian Women’s Circle in various capacities and sang in choir for many years. She loved her church and its members. She was a member of the Pilot Club, Gaycettes, Talladega Study Club, Junior Welfare League, Holly Garden Club, numerous bridge clubs and American Nurses Association. She worked as a registered nurse at Citizens Hospital in Talladega for 15 years in the operating room and as nursing supervisor. She also worked as a R.N. at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke for 20 years. While living in Roanoke, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Music Club, Silhouette Club and several bridge clubs. She worked with Girl Scouts and made many wonderful friends.
She is survived by her son, Todd Munroe Hayes (Karen Mann); daughter, Margaret Leigh Ellis (Gregory); grandson, Jackson Harrison Hayes (Daisha) and their children, Harper and Charlotte; step-grandson, Samuel Anderson Mann; niece, Marjorie Stewart Daniel (David), their children, Leslie Motley (Shenan) and their children, Bo and Drake; niece, Ashley Caffey (Austin) and their children, Garrett and Price; niece, Joanne Stewart Bozeman (Barry), their children, Jody Bozeman (Holly), and their children, Landon and Livia, and Bradley Bozeman (Nikki); niece, Pam Jones (deceased) and her children, Allison Moore (deceased) and Clair Fantaske; nephew, Allen Roberts (Nancy) and their children Kim, Kerri and Allen; nephew, Alan Jones (Debra) and their children Christopher and Mitchell; brother-in-law, Curtis Martin (Nancy); stepdaughters, Becky D’allochio and Barbara Martin, her daughter Lauren Richards (Nathan) and their child Oceayn; and stepsons, Robert Martin, Russell Martin (Darcy) and James Martin (Cynthia) and their children Megan Clark (Andrew) and Kelli Alley (Blair). Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, Altus Whitner Herring and Irma Leona Buchel Herring; sisters, Virginia Jones and Mary Sessions and her twin sister, Margaret Ann Herring Stewart; brother, Altus Welton Herring; first husband, Walter Jackson Hayes; husband, James Russell Martin: grandson, Aaron Davis Hayes; and brother-in-law, Dr. Willis Martin (Barbara).
