Celebration of life services for Joseph Charles Lett, 81, will be held Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013, at 3:30 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Oxford with visitation prior to the service from 12:30-3:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens immediately following the service.

Joe died peacefully at UAB Hospital on Thursday, August 29, 2013 after a long illness. Joe was born on February 11, 1932 in Oxford, Alabama.

He graduated from Calhoun County High School in 1950, joined the Navy, and on December 23, 1950 married Bobbie Dean Saxon. They lived in San Diego, California as Joe proudly served his country during the Korean War. He was extremely proud of his service to his country. Joe and Bobbie returned to Oxford where Joe became actively involved in the community as a banker for 35 years, ordained minister, and community servant. Joe is an alumnus of Jacksonville State University and a graduate of Louisiana State University School of Banking. Joe was actively involved in the community of Oxford. He was an avid Oxford fan and enjoyed attending any sport event that Oxford High School was playing in. He was often heard telling that he had missed less than a dozen Oxford football games since returning from the Navy in 1954. He was a charter member and past captain of the Oxford Quarterback Club, past president of Lions Club, and named Anniston Star's Man of the Year in 1978. As acting post commander of the Oxford American Legion he organized the annual Veteran's Day celebration held at Veteran's Memorial Park in Oxford. He was an active and faithful member of First Baptist Church of Oxford where he taught the Baraca Sunday School Class and was a deacon emeritus. Joe and Bobbie lived in Wadley Alabama for a short period of time where he served that community as a city council member and deacon of Wadley Baptist Church. Joe and Bobbie traveled extensively throughout their life with the Holy Land being their favorite destination.

Joe was preceeded in death by his parents, Jesse Collier Lett and Annie Mae Green Lett and siblings Dr. James H. Lett, Erma Lett Mitchell, and Otto Allen Lett. Survivors include his loving wife Bobbie Saxon Lett and his children Cynthia Saxon Lett Williams (Bill), Michael Joseph Lett (Debbie) all of Oxford and a brother Jerre Wayne Lett of Hartselle; 6 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The celebration of life services will be officiated by Rev. Buddy Nelson and Rev. Jim McCain. Pallbearers are his grandsons Jason Lett, Jake Goggans, James Lett, Saxon Lett, nephew Tom Saxon, and friends Allen Hubbard and Vic Hall. Honorary pallbearers are Dave Bryant, Jack Grizzard, Sam Higginbotham, Flem Houston, Stanley Merrill, Buford Parker, Bob Pope, Greg Smith, Leon Smith, Pete Smith, Rick Taylor, and members of the Baraca Sunday School Class.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to The First Baptist Church of Oxford building fund or a charity of your choice in memory of our father.
