Child dies in Wedowee crash

WEDOWEE--A child was killed in a two-vehicle accident on Wednesday at approximately 7:30 a.m. The accident occurred at the intersection of U.S. Highway 431 and North Main Street in Wedowee, across from Wedowee Village shopping center.

The drivers were Amber Vargas, 21, of Wedowee, who was in a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer, and Jeanette Thomas, 69, of Wedowee, who was driving a 2013 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck.

Listed as the fatality was Sophia Isabelle Vargas, 2. Also injured in the Trailblazer were Mrs. Vargas, Alejandro Vargas, 4, and Liliana Vargas, 1. They were taken to Wedowee Hospital. Thomas was uninjured.

According to Randolph County E-911, responders included Wedowee Police Department, Alabama State Troopers, Randolph County Sheriff's Office and Reserves, Southern Ambulance Transport and A&M Volunteer Fire Department.

The Wedowee Police Department and the Alabama Department of Public Safety are currently investigating the incident. Wedowee Police Department thanks all the responding agencies for their assistance.
